The disciples found themselves in peril on the sea of Galilee as a storm tossed their boat, assailed by wind and water. We, too, find ourselves in the midst of a storm. We search, but find no solutions and, like the disciples, we yield to fear.
Are we going to let fear hinder us from our service to God? Will we be discouraged because our schedules are disrupted and plans changed? God can turn anything around and cause it to be good. I have heard where some churches made new contacts through online services and personal ministering. Now that things are beginning to open up, the Sunday Schools have the opportunity to bring those new ones in. Faith to keep working will be blessed of the Lord. God has opened the door for us.
In John 6:19, the admission is there – “… and they were afraid.” What were they afraid of? They saw someone walking on the sea—an unknown. Was it a ghost? A vision? A spirit? These were seasoned fishermen. They knew the dangers of the sea. They were not inexperienced boaters. This was different. Who walked on the water?
The next verse gives assurance. “But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.” Fear left when they recognized Jesus. And Peter asked for more— “Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water” (Matt. 14:28). Jesus said, “Come.”
When they came into the ship, guess what! “The wind ceased.”
When we recognize Jesus and allow Him to take charge of the situation, whatever it may be, we can have the assurance that it is all right—because I see Him walking on the sea. That knowledge enables me to stay calm in the midst of turmoil.
The disciples were amazed “beyond measure” and worshiped Him. “Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound…”
