The Trinity

General Overseer M. A. Tomlinson referenced the subject of the Trinity in his Annual Address to the 65th Assembly in 1970. A few excerpts follow:

“The doctrine of the Trinity has always been readily accepted by the Church from the beginning, and is believed by millions of Christians…

We will not delve into the ideas and opinions of the theologians, since it is this that has distracted some from the truth. The Trinity is a mystery; the truth of which is clearly known to exist… God saw fit to have His Church established in this world, and gave it the authority through the General Assembly to rightly divide the Word of truth. The Assembly has never found this difficult when the Holy Ghost is given opportunity to direct in the searching and revelations.

“Trinity is the union of three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost—in one Godhead. We know there is one God, but He makes Himself known in three Persons. The Bible points these out, and the work attributed to each One. From everlasting, the Son has existed, but, while He is possessed of all the perfections of the Father, He is not the Father. The Holy Ghost is described as a distinct Person with all the attributes of God, yet He is neither the Father nor the Son. From the beginning, we have a clear picture of this union, or unity, which we would do well to follow.” (65th AM, pp. 36, 37).

The Questions and Subjects Committee brought this before the Assembly for consideration which received unanimous agreement. Their report stated in part: “We recommend that this Assembly place its approval on the Bible doctrine of the Trinity as given by the General Overseer in that section of his address which defined the Trinity as the union of three persons—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost in one Godhead.” (65th AM, p. 121).

The following diagram is a visual to help in the understanding of the concept of the Trinity. It is called the Shield of Trinity Symbol and it dates back to the 12th century. This visual along with the following explanation of the symbol is from the website: www.symbolsage.com.

The Meaning of the Shield of Trinity Symbol: The Shield of Trinity emblem explains that the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all fully and completely God. They are one and the same, but, still, characteristically unique from one another. The links depicted in the diagram are omnidirectional, and the words can be read and interpreted from any starting point in any direction.

It explains the nature of the Holy Trinity described in the Bible. Hence, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are three distinct persons of the same substance. It also defines an important concept in Christian theology of mutual dwelling, which means that the three persons are permanently present in one another. It goes further to explain that they are all involved in each of their operations—creation, redemption, and blessing.
